Quick Start

This is a standalone HTML file that runs entirely in your web browser

How to Run

Method 2: Drag and Drop

  1. Download the file christmas-knowledge-graph_improved.html
  2. Open your web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, etc.)
  3. Drag the HTML file into the browser window
  4. The graph will load immediately

Features

Interactive Controls

  • Category Filters: Check/uncheck categories to show/hide different types of nodes
  • Relationship Filters: Check/uncheck relationship types to show/hide different kinds of connections (originated in, created by, derived from, influenced, popularized, associated with)
  • Link Distance Slider: Adjust spacing between nodes
  • Zoom: Use mouse wheel or pinch gestures to zoom in/out
  • Pan: Click and drag on empty space to move around the graph
  • Reset to Star Shape: Click this button to restore the original layout

Node Interactions

  • Hover: Hover over any node to see its connections highlighted
  • Click: Click any node to open its Wikipedia page in a new tab
  • Drag: Click and drag nodes to reposition them

Visual Legend

  • Node Size: Larger nodes have more connections
  • Multi-colored Stars: Nodes belonging to multiple categories
  • Solid Arrows: Direct connections
  • Dashed Lines: Indirect (2nd degree) connections

Node Categories

The graph includes these categories:

  • 🟡 Religion - Religious elements

  • 🟢 Place - Countries and regions

  • 🔴 Tradition - Christmas customs and practices

  • Commercialisation - Modern commercial aspects

  • 🟣 Symbol - Christmas symbols

  • 🔵 Person - Historical figures

  • 🟠 Food - Traditional foods and beverages

Relationship Types

The graph uses 6 simplified relationship types:

  • 🟢 Originated In - Geographic origins of traditions

  • 🟡 Associated With - Cultural associations and connections

  • 🟣 Influenced - Cultural influence and shaping

  • 🔴 Derived From - Evolution and derivation from earlier traditions

  • 🔵 Created By - Who created or authored something

  • 🟠 Popularized - How traditions spread and gained popularity

Technical Details

What’s Included

  • All code is self-contained in one HTML file
  • Uses React 18 for the UI
  • Uses react-force-graph-2d library for visualization
  • No external dependencies to install
  • No internet connection required once the page loads (except for flag images and Wikipedia links)

File Size

Approximately 50-60 KB - very lightweight!

No Data Collection

This file runs entirely locally in your browser. No data is sent to any server, and no tracking is performed.

Troubleshooting

The file won’t open

  • Make sure the file has a .html extension
  • Try right-clicking and selecting “Open with” → your browser

The graph appears blank

  • Wait a few seconds for the libraries to load
  • Try refreshing the page (F5 or Ctrl+R)
  • Make sure JavaScript is enabled in your browser

Flag images do not show

  • The flag images load from WordPress CDN (requires internet connection)
  • If offline, you’ll see placeholder boxes instead

Performance issues

  • Close other browser tabs to free up memory
  • Try using Chrome or Firefox for best performance
  • Reduce the number of visible categories if the graph feels slow
